Taraba saw Compassion in Action

In the spirit of Mark 16:15, which commands us to spread the gospel to every corner of the earth, the GCK Medical Missions team embarked on a groundbreaking journey to Taraba State, Nigeria. This initiative, a crucial arm of the GCK, has one mission: to embody the love of Christ through medical care and community outreach, touching lives and hearts worldwide.

A diverse team of medical professionals and volunteers hailing from the UK, USA, and various parts of Nigeria arrived on the dusty grounds of Wukari on March 22, 2024. The warm welcome of the Christian leaders in the region signaled the beginning of a weeklong outreach. The community’s eagerness for the Medical Missions program was palpable, with attendees streaming in days before its commencement. The outreach unfolded in two primary arms: Community Engagement and Medical Services.

Community Outreach
GCK Soccer Tournament: The atmosphere was electric as eight teams competed in a spirited soccer tournament on March 23. Beyond the thrill of the game, this event served as a platform to instill character and vision in young players while sharing the gospel’s message.

Baby Shower: Over 500 expectant mothers were treated to a joyous Baby Shower on the program’s third day. Amidst games and celebration, the women were uplifted spiritually and emotionally, with one participant expressing profound gratitude for the opportunity to connect with Christ on her maternal journey.

Medical Outreach
As an extension of the loving arms of Jesus, the Medical Missions team provided comprehensive care to those in need at Ebenezer Primary School, Glorious Light Academy, and Kwarafa University.

  1. Primary Care Consultation: From vital signs assessments to personalized counseling, individuals received holistic care tailored to their needs.
  2. Eye and Dental Care: Optometrists and dental professionals offered crucial services, including check-ups and eyeglasses, ensuring improved quality of life for many.
  3. Mental Health Support: Recognizing the importance of mental well-being, counselors provided invaluable support and guidance to those grappling with psychological challenges.
  4. Maternal and Child Health Services: Pregnant women, previously underserved, found help through the Medical Missions team, receiving vital antenatal care and referrals for further treatment. Among the beneficiaries was Mrs. Salome Peters, a pregnant woman facing complications due to lack of antenatal care. Through the intervention of the GCK Medical Missions, she received the urgent attention she needed, underscoring the tangible impact of their work.
  5. Medication Dispensing: Free medications were distributed, bridging gaps in access to essential healthcare resources.

As the outreach culminated in the esteemed presence of Her Excellency, the First Lady of Taraba State, Mrs. Agyin Agbu Kefas, it became evident that the impact extended far beyond medical intervention. Through the team’s compassionate care and selfless service, lives were transformed, communities were empowered, and the love of Christ shone brightly in the community. Dr. Ike Okafo, MD—an Anesthesiology Specialist in Chicago, USA—aptly noted that the seeds of hope and transformation sowed will continue to bear fruit in the lives of the people of Taraba.

We can see the community change happening right before us; it’s amazing to behold. God is about to do His best work for His glory.

Dr. Ike Okafo, MD

Indeed, God works through human hands, and through these acts of compassion and service, His love is made manifest. The Taraba people are grateful to the GCK Medical Missions team for being vessels of God’s love and healing.
